Many students want to forward email from their BI account to Hotmail. Forwarding can be activated/de-activated through your own pages at  http://www.bi.no/banner

The issue with forwarding email to Hotmail is the Junk Mail filter that Hotmail is offering. Most people are receiving a large amount of junk mail/spam, thus they want to activate this Junk Mail filter. This also means that all email from BI are placed in the Junk Mail folder, and will be deleted automatically within a short time. Quite a few are also experiencing that email from BI is never delivered to Hotmail at all, and by follwing the guidelines shown below you can minimize these problems.

After logging into Hotmail, click on the Mail tab, then on Options (on the right side of the screen). You will then see Mail Options and then the choice Junk E-Mail Protection. You will have several choices here, and the interesting ones are Junk E-Mail Filter (here you set the degree/effectiveness of the filter, from Low to Exclusive), and Safe List.

The first thing you should do is to click on Safe List. Here you can add specific senders or whole domains (eg addresses ending with @bi.no). We recommend that you enter the following in this list

  • @bi.no
  • @student.bi.no
  • @mail.student.bi.no

Theoretically, all email from official BI-addresses will then be placed in your inbox on Hotmail. However, a few users have experienced that this is not sufficient, and in addition you should adjust the level of Junk E-Mail Protection to Low. This will naturally lead to the possibility of receiving some additional junk mail/spam, but also ensuring that email from BI will be delivered.

We would also like to mention that we are not experiencing these kind of problems when forwarding email to other providers of email-services (eg Yahoo or Gmail).

BI cannot be placed responsible for loss of email if we can verify that email from BI's systems have been accepted by the systems of the email-provider you are using.
